Yoga & Body Work
What To Expect
What Is Yoga?
The word ‘yoga’ means to bind or to connect. What we are trying to connect to are the dimensions of being human that make us whole. Thus, the practice of yoga is one that actively involves the integration of a healthy mind, body, and spirit.
I have been studying yoga and meditation for over ten years. My style of practice is one that emphasizes awareness on the mind and body level. I encourage students to slow down, observe what arises emotionally and physically, and develop a relationship with it in a way that allows a person to improve themselves while decreasing self-judgement.
Mine is a hatha based practice that emphasizes improvements in breathing, posture, balance, and mobility. I emphasize the importance of basic functional dynamics that are part and parcel to being able to function in the world from the perspective of proper body mechanics without pain or strain.
Because of a Master’s degree in counseling psychology, my yoga instruction is informed by the realities of trauma, how it is stored in the body, how it creates tension, and such tension prevents one from living a more optimal life on all levels. Furthermore, I have studied both somatic psychologies, mainly bioenergetics therapy, as well as other traditional healing modalities such as tai chi and qi gong.
